بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Dear respected brothers and sisters

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

I pray you are all well. I just want to inform you about a very sad news. The Muslim Ummah (nation) has lost one of the very great Daa’ees among the English speakers communities in the entire world. That is our dear and very beloved brother Abu Talhah Dawood Burbank who died together with his wife and other in a coach explosion in Hajj today. I know Abu Talhah Dawood Burbank for the last 19 years as a man of Sunnah who has spent all his life since he became Muslim until he passed away, seeking knowledge, translating very significant books and teaching others. I personally have not seen in the entire UK anyone like him in terms of his manners, generosity, humbleness, love to teach the Sunnah to others etc. May Allah reward him for all his works and grant him Paradise with his wife and others who were in the same coach. Please pray for them, wa As-Salaam

Your brother

New post on Covered Pearls

Woman travelling accompanied by a group of other women without a mahram

by AbdurRahman.org

In order to preserve both the man and woman's honor and to safeguard their hearts from temptation, and as a means of blocking the pathways that lead to corruption, a woman is restricted from traveling alone without a mahram. This is since if a woman is accompanied by a mahram, he will preserve her, safeguard her and take care of her needs. The Prophet  said: "It is not lawful for a woman that believes in Allaah and the Last Day to travel the distance of two days unless accompanied by a mahram."[3]

In one narration it states: "a day and a night"[4] while in another narration it states: "to travel" without specifying a time-frame.[5]

What is intended here is that a woman should not travel alone without a mahram. If she does so, i.e. travels without a mahram, she would be disobeying Allaah and His Messenger, committing what Allaah has forbidden and exposing herself to fitnah. This applies generally to all situations and time periods.

As for what some people claim that if a woman travels accompanied by a group of other women, this takes the place of a mahram then this is a view that is in opposition to the Prophet's statement: "It is not lawful for a woman that believes in Allaah and the Last Day to travel the distance of a day unless accompanied by a mahram." [6]

A group of women do not serve as a mahram for a woman. The mahram of a woman is well-known it is a male that she is forbidden to marry due to family-ties, such as her father, her son, her paternal uncle, and her maternal uncle...or due to some allowable reason, such as marital ties, like the father of her husband or the son of her husband, or such as foster-suckling ties based on the Prophet's statement: "Foster-suckling makes forbidden that which is forbidden due to family-ties." [7]

Therefore, a woman's mahram is any male that she is forbidden (to marry) due to a family-tie or some allowable reason. This forbiddance (of marriage) must also be endless, i.e. everlasting. So what doesn't fall into this category is the temporary (marital) forbiddance such as the wife's sister and the wife's paternal and maternal aunt. This marital forbiddance is only applicable for a prescribed time. This is why the husband cannot serve as a mahram for his wife's sister even though he is forbidden from marrying her since this marital forbiddance is temporary. In the same manner, he cannot be a mahram to his wife's maternal and paternal aunt. This is what a mahram is. As for a group of women, they are not a mahram.

The Prophet  stipulated that a woman be accompanied by a mahram when traveling under all circumstances, regardless of whether she travels by foot, on a riding beast, in a car or by airplane.

Some people today claim that there is no problem if a woman travels by airplane and her mahram dispatches her in the departure airport while another mahram picks her up at the arrival airport. We say: No, this is not permissible, since she has traveled without a mahram. And the Prophet  said: "It is not lawful for a woman that believes in Allaah and the Last Day to travel the distance of two days unless accompanied by a mahram." This applies to whether she travels on foot, by car or on a riding beast. The Prophet  did not specify. However, the cause is there, and it is due to the fitnah that is feared will befall her even if she is on an airplane. So she is not safe from fitnah even on board a plane.

Furthermore, let's suppose for example that the airplane is forced to change its destination and so it lands in a different country who will pick her up in this other country? That is why there must be a mahram present along with the woman.

This is such that once a man came to the Prophet  and said: "O Messenger of Allaah, I have enlisted for such and such battle expedition, but my wife has gone out for Hajj." The Prophet  told him: "Go back and make Hajj with your wife."[8]

The Prophet  turned this man away from battle so that he may accompany his wife on Hajj and serve as a mahram for her. This is proof that having a mahram is a condition for a woman to travel on Hajj or to other places, regardless of whether she is with a group of people or not. This is why the scholars of Fiqh, may Allaah have mercy on them, mentioned that one of the conditions in which Hajj becomes obligatory on a woman is when she has a mahram available to travel with her. So if one is not available for her, she is then not obligated to make Hajj until a mahram does become accessible for her.

Is it permissible for the Muslim to curse Shaytaan ?

AbdurRahman.org | September 2, 2011 at 5:10 pm | Categories: Shayaateen - The devils, Weapons of the Believer | URL: http://wp.me/p1M177-4z

Fatwa no. 19753

Q: A man heard me cursing Satan one day and criticized me for that. He said it is prohibited to curse Satan, because cursing him makes him haughty. Is this correct? Please, advise. May Allah reward you!

A: When Satan incites a Muslim to sin or whispers (suggests) to him, it is permissible for him to seek refuge and protection in Allah Alone from Satan. Also, it is permissible for the Muslim who fears the harm of Satan's plot, or that of his supporters, to seek the help of Allah to ward off Satan's evil and harm. He should often recite Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) so that Allah will rebuke him and thwart his plot in a disgraceful manner.

And Allah (Exalted be He) states: And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitân (Satan), then seek refuge with Allâh. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower. He (Exalted be He) says: And say: "My Lord! I seek refuge with You from the whisperings (suggestions) of the Shayâtîn (devils). "And I seek refuge with You, My Lord! lest they should come near me."

It was authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that: when getting up to pray, he (peace be upon him) used to say: I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing and All-Knowing from the accursed Satan , from his Hamz (evil whispers) and his Nafkh (arrogance) and his Nafth (spell and in that Hadith scholars interpreted Nafth as Poetry).

It was also compiled by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad (Hadith compilation) Vol. 5 p. 59 on the authority of Abu Tamimah Al-Hujaimy that a man who was riding behind the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

One day as I was riding behind the Prophet on a donkey, it stumbled and I shouted, “Let Satan perish!” The Prophet said, “Do not say ‘let Satan perish,’ for if you say sohe will feel important and haughty and he will say, ‘I thwarted him with my power!’ Instead say, ‘In the name of Allah,’ so that he will (feel humiliated and) be smaller than a fly”A similar narration was related by Abu Dawud in his Sunan (Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes).

It was mentioned in the book of Al-Samt wa Adab Al-Lisan (Silence and Etiquettes of the Tongue) written by Ibn Abu Al-Dunia p. 205 on the authority of Mujahid (may Allah be merciful with him) saying:

"Seldom do people mention Satan but he attends to them; when he hears someone invoking curses on him, he says, 'Indeed, you invoke curses on a cursed being.' There is nothing more breaking to Satan's back than saying 'there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah.'" This is the effective cure for fending off Satan's harm from man, since the evil of the rebellious Jinn (creatures created from fire) cannot be removed except by that.

Allah cursed Satan in His Book repeatedly when he became arrogant and refused to carry out the order of Allah to prostrate before Adam in honor and respect. As a result, Allah described Satan as an accursed outcast. He has been expelled from the mercy and Paradise of Allah on the Day of Resurrection.

Allah (Exalted be He) states:
They (all those who worship others than Allâh) invoke nothing but female deities besides Him (Allâh), and they invoke nothing but Shaitân (Satan), a persistent rebel! Allâh cursed him. And he [Shaitân (Satan)] said: "I will take an appointed portion of your slaves. He may He be Exalted) stated: (Allâh) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajîm (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsîr At-Tabarî] "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."

The Messenger (peace be upon him) cursed Satan in his Salah (prayer) when he (the Prophet) resisted him and wanted to harm and destroy him. It was related by Imam Muslim in his Sahih (authentic) Book of Hadith on the authority of Abu Al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) saying:

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) stood up (to pray) and we heard him say:" I seek refuge in Allah from you." Then said: "I curse you with Allah's curse" three times, then he stretched out his hand as though he was taking hold of something. When he finished the prayer, we said: Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something during the prayer which we have not heard you say before, and we saw you stretch out your hand. He replied: Allah's enemy Satan came with a flame of fire to put it in my face, so I said three times: "I seek refuge in Allah from you." Then I said three times: "I curse you with Allah's full curse." But he did not retreat (on any one of these) three occasions. Thereafter, I meant to seize him. I swear by Allah that had it not been for the supplication of my brother Solomon he would have been bound, and made an object of sport for the children of Madinah.

Therefore, it is permissible for the Muslim to curse Satan when he comes to harm him or tries to dissuade him from obedience to Allah. Nonetheless, he should not give up seeking refuge in Allah from Satan, always reciting Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah), Bismillah [In the Name of Allah] or other Adhkar (invocations), which are permissible under the Shari`ah (Islamic law). This guarantees protection of the Muslim against the evil of Satan.Based on the Ayah (Qur'anic verse) and Hadiths mentioned above, a Muslim should not take to cursing Satan needlessly as a form of following the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

An amazing story from al-Hassan al-Basri (rahimahullah)

AbdurRahman.org | August 29, 2011 at 1:39 pm | Categories: Shayaateen - The devils, The Plots of Shayaateen | URL: http://wp.me/p1M177-1T

Shytan has power over the believers due to their sins

A hadith states, "Allah is with the judge as long as he does not commit any injustice. If he commits any injustice, Allah is free from him and keeps Shytan with him." [1]

Abu al-Faraj ibn al-Jauzi [2] has related a unique story from al-Hassan al-Basri (rahimahullah). The story, depending on how authentic it is, shows the ability of a human in overpowering Shytan if he is sincere to Allah in his religion and it shows how Shytan can take advantage of the human when he strays.

Al-Hasan al-Basri narrated that there was a tree that was worshipped instead of Allah. One man decided to chop down that tree. He was going to chop down the tree out of anger for the sake of Allah. On the way to the tree he met Iblees who was in the form of a man. Iblees asked him, "What do you plan on doing?" The man answered, "I am going to chop down that tree that is worshipped instead of Allah." Shytan said, "If you do not worship it, why should it harm you if others do so?" The man replied, "I will chop it down." Shytan then told him, "Would you like something better than that" Do not cut it and you will get two dinars every morning under your pillow." "From where will I get that?" the man asked. "I will give it to you," said Iblees. The man returned and the next morning he found two dinars under his pillow. The following morning he again found two dinars under his pillow. On the following morning he did not find anything. He got upset and went to chop down the tree. Shytan again appeared to him in the shape of the same man. Shytan asked him, "What do you want to do?" The man answered, "I plan on cutting down that tree that is worshipped instead of Allah!" Iblees said, "You have lied. There is no way you will be able to do it," The man left to chop it down. The earth swallowed him and him until it almost killed him. Iblees asked, "Do you know who I . I am Shytan. I met you for the first time when you were angry for the sake of Allah and I had no power over you. I deceived you by two dinars and you stopped what you had intended to do [for the sake of Allah]. Now you have come because you are angry about the two dinars, and I have gotten mastery over you."

[1] This was recorded by al-Haakim and al-Baihaqi with a hasan chain. See al- Albanee Sahih al-Jaami, vol. 2, p.130

[2] Ibn al-Jawzi, Talbees Iblees, p. 43 [The author, al-Ashqar alluded to the fact that the authenticity of this story needs to be ascertained. Most likely, it is from the Israaeeliyaat or stories o the Jews and Christians.]

One day we were praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and when he ﷺ raised his head from the position of ruku` (bowing position), he said: “Sami Allahu leman hamidah” – ‘Allah hears the one who praises Him’. A man from behind added:

رَبَّنـا وَلَكَ الحَمْـدُ حَمْـداً كَثـيراً طَيِّـباً مُـبارَكاً فيه

“Rabbanaa wa la kal hamd, hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feeh”

‘Our Lord, all praise is due only to You, praise which is abundant, excellent and blessed.’

When we finished [the prayer] the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Who spoke?’ The man said, ‘I did’. He ﷺ said,

‘Indeed I saw some 30 angels all scuffling to see which one of them could record it.’

Two Qualities of Slave of Allah which will make him enter Paradise

AbdurRahman.org | July 22, 2011 at 10:36 am | Categories: Dhikr, Great-Rewards-in-Islam | URL: http://wp.me/p1FIuh-2r

The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-said:

There are two characteristics or two qualities that if a Muslim slave of Allaah is continuous upon, will enter Paradise, they are simple but those who do them are few. To say SubhanAllaah at the end of every prayer ten times, says alhamdulillah ten times and says Allaahu akbar ten times, which is equivalent to 150 times on the tongue and 1500 on the scales. And he says Allaahu Akbar 34 times when he goes to bed and he says alhamdulillah 33 times and says SubhanAllaah 33 times, and that is equivalent to 100 on the tongue and 1000 on the scales.

Convert your regular spending on the family into charity

AbdurRahman.org | July 18, 2011 at 2:06 pm | Categories: Great-Rewards-in-Islam | URL: http://wp.me/p1FIuh-1a

293. Abu Mas`ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said,

"When someone spends on his family seeking his reward for it from Allah, it is counted as a charity from him". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary from Riyad-as-Saliheen:  `Seeking his reward' means that one is supporting his family as a duty entrusted by Allah. It is also warranted by compassion for the near ones. A person who does it as a duty ordained by Allah and shows mercy to his deserving relatives to attain His Pleasure then what he spends with this intention on his children will be eligible for reward from Allah.

Allâh burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maulâ (Patron, Suppor-ter and Protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people." (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

Allaah's Attribute of Descent

AbdurRahman.org | June 29, 2011 at 4:05 pm | Categories: Asma-wa-Sifat, Attributes of Allah | URL: http://wp.me/p1DWoK-35

The Attribute of Descent

The second question of Fatwa No. 1643

Q 2: I had a discussion with a person educated in modern sciences. He was a teacher at the university of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He said: "Your Lord descends during the last part of every night to the lowest heaven." I told him that there is no doubt about that and I completed the Hadith for him. He said: "If this is true, then it means that your Lord does not rise over the throne as mentioned in the Qur'an: The Most Gracious (Allâh) rose over (Istawâ) the (Mighty) Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). The last part of the night exists continuously on the earth according to the rotation of the earth around itself with Allah's Might until the Day of Judgment." Then I stopped talking.

A: There is no contradiction between the descent of Allah (Exalted be He) to the first heaven in the last third of every night in different areas and His Istiwa' (Allah's rising over the Throne in a manner that befits Him).

He (Exalted be He) is not similar to His creation in any of His Attributes. Read more of this post

The Status Of Knowledge Pertaining To The Names And Attributes Of Allah Sub'hanahu Wa Ta'ala

The Status Of Knowledge Pertaining To The Names And Attributes Of Allah Sub'hanahu Wa Ta'ala
Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullah)

Stated Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) in the forward of his book:

Verily, belief in the names and attributes of allah is one of the pillars of faith in Allah the exalted. They are,

1. belief in the existence of Allah
2. belief in His Lordship (Ruboobiyyah)
3. belief in His sole Right to all forms of worship (Uloohiyyah)
4. belief in His Names and Attributes (Asmaa' was-Sifaat)

Furthermore, it is one of the three categories of Tawheed:

1. belief in His Lordship (Ruboobiyyah)
2. belief in His sole Right to all forms of worship (Uloohiyyah)
3. belief in His Names and Attributes (al-Asmaa' was-Sifaat)

So, the status of the Tawheed of al-Asmaa' was-Sifaat in the Religion is very high and of the utmost importance. It is not possible for anyone to worship Allah in a complete way , until he has acquired the knowledge of the Names and Attributes of Allah the Exalted, in order to worship him upon clarity.

Allah the Exalted has said,

And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allâh, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do.
(Sooratul-A'raaf,7:180)

Calling upon Allah with his Names and Attributes is to be done when requesting something specific , Read more of this post

The Names of Allah Are Tawqeefiyyah (Restricted to Textual evidence)

AbdurRahman.org | June 25, 2011 at 3:18 pm | Categories: Asma-wa-Sifat | URL: http://wp.me/p1DWoK-2b

Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullah) said:

CHAPTER: The Names of Allah Are Tawqeefiyyah There Is No Place For Intellectual Free-Thinking Regarding Them:

Allah's Names are tawqeefiyyah, meaning a kind of knowledge that is restricted to textual evidence; there is no place for intellectual free-thinking regarding them. Based upon this, we must suffice ourselves with what is found in the Book and the Sunnah, without adding or taking anything away. This is because the intellect will not be able to grasp the understanding of Allah's Names that He rightfully deserves, so then we must suffice ourselves with textual evidences only.

This is due to Allah's statement, Read more of this post

A Mind-Map Summary of Aqidah at-Tadmuriyyah of Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah

This is a summary of the the book pertaining to al-Asmaa' was-Sifaat and al-Qadaa wal-qadar. "Taqreeb ut-Tadmuriyyah" of Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen has been relied upon. This is more useful to those who have already studied the book, and it serves as a memory, revision aid, or a checklist, however its also useful for someone who would like to get an overall feel of what the book covers and it would help them to structure their study of the book. The maps contain more or less all the details and points in the book.

The first two parts deal with the Names and Attributes (al-Asmaa was-Sifaat). The remaining parts deal with the Divine Decree (al-Qadaa wal-qadar).

  • View Part 1: The Introduction, Two Foundations, and Two Examples
  • View Part 2: The Seven Rules
  • View Part 3: al-Qadr and ash-Shar' (the Divine Decree and the Divine Legislation)
  • View Part 4: al-Qadr and ash-Shar': Using al-Qadr To Argue Against as-Shar'
  • View Part 5: What is Ash-Shar` (the Divine Legislation)
  • View Part 6: al-Fanaa and the Two Principles of al-Amr and the Two Principles of al-Qadr

Meaning of "Ahsa" in the hadith related to memorizing the 99 Names of Allaah

AbdurRahman.org | June 24, 2011 at 4:43 pm | Categories: Asma-wa-Sifat | URL: http://wp.me/p1DWoK-1x

Merits of memorizing Allah's Names

Q: What is meant by the word "Ahsa'" in the Hadith that is related to the Messenger of Allah on the Names of Allah "Anyone who enumerates (Ahsa') them will be admitted to Paradise." ?

A: Ihsa' means to memorize, contemplate, understand and act according to them.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Truly, Allahhas Ninety-nine Names. Anyone who enumerates them will be admitted to Paradise." and in another wording: "Anyone who memorizes them by heart, will be admitted to Paradise."

This means to memorize these Names by heart and understand their meaning as this entails goodness and useful knowledge. It also leads to the uprightness of the heart and the more a person will fear Allah and fulfill His Rights.

Q: Your Eminence Shaykh! Some people may count on such Hadiths and think that memorizing the Most Beautiful Names of Allah without effort is sufficient to be admitted to Paradise?

A: This is a misunderstanding as such a Hadith urges Muslims to act according to what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) prescribed and called for such as: "Anyone who memorizes them by heart, they will be admitted to Paradise." with regard to the MostBeautiful Names of Allah, and: "Fasting the Day of `Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) expiates the sins of two years: past one and coming one." Fasting on the Day of `Ashura’ (10th of Muharram) atones for the sins committed in the preceding year. All these Hadiths urge the Muslims to obey Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He). It is one of the reasons of forgiveness.

When a Muslim pursues the means of forgiveness and does not insist on comitting major sins, this will be a reason for his forgiveness. If a Muslim does not avoid committing major sins, these will not take effect.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The Five Obligatory Daily Prayers and from Friday Prayer to Friday Prayer, and from Ramadan to Ramadan, are expiations for what happened between them, provided the major sins were avoided." And in another wording: "unless major sins are committed."

The Jumhur (dominant majority of scholars) holds the view that the promise of forgiveness that is stated in Hadith on the merits of such and such, such as the favor of Salah (Prayer) and how they erase one's sins, or the favor of Wudu' (ablution), fasting on the Day of `Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah), fasting on the Day of `Ashura’ (10th of Muharram) or Ihsa' the Most Beautiful Names of Allah, etc., is conditional upon avoiding major sins and uprightness. These acts are reasons for having one's sins forgiven in addition to the other reasons which Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) had legislated and avoiding major sins which prevent forgiveness.Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says, And those who, when they have committed Fâhishah (illegal sexual intercourse) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allâh and ask forgiveness for their sins; - and none can forgive sins but Allâh - and do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know. One of the reasons for having sins not forgiven is insisting on committing sins and not repenting, there is neither might nor power except with Allah!

To sum up: The Promise of Allah to admit anyone who memorizes the Beautiful Names of Allah to Paradise, anyone who fasts on the Day of `Ashura' to atone the sins committed in the preceding year, and fasting on the Day of `Arafah are all conditional upon abandoning major sins. This is also mentioned in a Hadith related to Tawhid (monotheism) such as: "Give the good news of entering Paradise to anyone who honestly testifies that there is no god but Allah." This is conditional upon abandoning sins. If a person insists on doing sins, they are left to the Will of Allah; He may forgive him or He may throw them into Hell-Fire because of their sins and because they did not repent. When a person is purified of their sins, they will come out of Hell-Fire and will be admitted to Paradise.

Every Muslim should not rely on the Hadiths encouraging and promising good and refrain from the Hadiths and Ayahs (Qur'anic verses) of threatening. They should act according to both and beware of the things which Allah prohibited. They should remember the Hadiths and Ayahs that threaten those who transgress the limits set by Allah and disobey His Commands and at the same time they should anticipate good from Allah, hope for His Mercy and remember His Promise to forgive anyone who performs good deeds. A person should combine between Khawf (fear) and Raja' (hope). A Muslim should not despair or feel secure. This is the way of the scholars and the believers. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says about His prophets: Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on Us with hope and fear , i.e., hope and fear and used to humble themselves before Us. And Those whom they call upon [like ‘Isâ (Jesus) - son of Maryam (Mary), ‘Uzair (Ezra), angel] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allâh), as to which of them should be the nearest; and they [‘Isâ (Jesus), ‘Uzair (Ezra), angels and others] hope for His Mercy and fear His Torment. This is the path of the believers who follow the Messengers. They believe in Allah Alone, fear Him, perform His obligatory acts, refrain from the things which He has prohibited, put their hopes in Him, and fear His Punishment.

The Correct meaning of 'Laa ilaaha illa Allaah' - by Shaikh ibn Baaz

AbdurRahman.org | June 17, 2011 at 10:34 am | Categories: New To Islam | URL: http://wp.me/p1CCz5-5w

Excerpt:

In Surah Al-Saffat (ayat 35 and 36), Allah states concerning the polytheists: Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha illa Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it). And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our alihah (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?" This indicates that the polytheists understood that the meaning of 'La ilaha illa Allah' superseded their deities and necessitated dedicating their acts of worship to Allah Alone. Thus, when one of them embraced Islam, he gave up Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship) and dedicated acts of worship to Allah Alone.

Had 'La ilaha illa Allah' meant only that there is no god but Allah, or that there is none worthy of obedience but Allah, they would have never rejected it. That is because they already knew that Allah is their Lord and Creator Who must be obeyed in the orders they believed to come from Him. Rather, they believed that worship of idols, prophets, angels, righteous people, trees and the like were their intercessors with Allah and brought them closer to Him. Allah says in Surah Yunus, aya 18: And they worship besides Allah things that harm them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah."
